Entry Requirements

UK citizens do not need a visa to visit the United States for tourism or attending events (including the Olympics), provided their stay is under 90 days. You will need to apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before travelling — this is not a visa but is mandatory. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov.

⚠ Apply for your ESTA at least 72 hours before your flight. ESTA approval is not guaranteed — if you have had past US visa refusals or criminal convictions, you may need a full visa instead.

ESTA Requirements

  • UK biometric passport (issued after October 2006)
  • Apply online at esta.cbp.dhs.gov (currently $21 USD)
  • Valid for 2 years or until passport expiry
  • Must be applied per trip intention — Olympics stays typically fine

Flights

Direct (non-stop) flights from the UK to Los Angeles operate daily from London Heathrow (LHR) and Gatwick (LGW) to LAX, Long Beach (LGB), and Burbank (BUR). Flight time: approximately 10–11 hours westbound (shorter eastbound).

Airlines flying direct from UK to LA: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, United. Book well in advance for July 2028 — prices will be significantly higher during the Games.

Practical Tips

  • Flying into LAX is most convenient for most venues
  • Consider Long Beach Airport (LGB) — smaller, less congested, check availability
  • Arrive 2–3 days before the Opening Ceremony (July 14) to avoid disruptions

Money & Currency

The US uses USD (US Dollar). UK debit and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted. Inform your bank before travelling.

  • ATMs: widely available; use major bank ATMs to avoid fees
  • Tipping: 18–20% at restaurants, $1–2/drink at bars, $5–10/day for hotel housekeeping
  • Contactless payment: widely accepted in LA

Getting Around LA

LA is a large, car-oriented city but has a functioning Metro rail system suitable for most Olympic venues. See our Metro Guide for full details. Uber and Lyft are widely available. Driving is possible but parking at venues is limited and expensive on event days.
