Entry Requirements
Australian citizens are eligible for the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and must apply for an ESTA before travelling. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov — it costs $21 USD and is valid for 2 years. Do not arrive without one.
Flights
Direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane to Los Angeles (LAX) operate daily via Qantas, United, and American Airlines. Flight time from Sydney: approximately 14–15 hours. From Perth: 17–18 hours.
Book as early as possible for July 2028 — Australians have strong Olympic participation interest and LA routes will be extremely competitive during the Games.
Money, Time & Tips
- Currency: USD. AUD not accepted — exchange at your bank before travel or use ATMs at LAX
- Time zone: LA is PDT (GMT-7) in July. Sydney is GMT+10 — LA is 17 hours behind
- Tipping: 18–20% at restaurants is standard and expected
- Weather: Hot and dry in July/August — average 28–30°C. Bring sunscreen
- Electricity: 120V Type A/B plug — bring an adapter
