LAX Overview
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the primary gateway for international visitors to the 2028 Olympics. It handles approximately 88 million passengers per year and is the largest airport on the US West Coast. During the 2028 Games, traffic volumes will be exceptional.
LAX is located in Westchester, approximately 15–25 miles from most Olympic venue locations (varying significantly by venue). The airport is well-connected to the Metro rail network through the K/C Line (Crenshaw/LAX Line) and the LAX Automated People Mover (APM) which opened in 2023.
LAX Automated People Mover (APM)
The APM opened in 2023 — not 2028 as previously reported in some guides. It connects all 9 terminal areas with the LAX-it rental car facility and Metro/bus connections. This is the recommended way to move between terminals and connect to ground transport. It is free to ride.
Getting from LAX to Olympic Venues
Metro Rail (LAX FlyAway + Metro)
Take the LAX FlyAway bus from outside arrivals to Union Station in Downtown LA (~50 min, $9.75 one-way). From Union Station, connect to all Metro rail lines. This is the most cost-effective option for reaching Downtown hotels and most venues.
Alternatively: LAX APM to Metro K/C Line (Aviation/LAX station) for connections to Inglewood (SoFi area) and the wider Metro network.
Rideshare (Uber, Lyft)
Pickup from designated LAX-it lot (accessible via shuttle from all terminals). During the 2028 Olympics, surge pricing will be significant — especially around Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Have a backup plan. Approximate base fares (off-peak): DTLA $30–50, Inglewood $15–25, Santa Monica $25–40, Anaheim $50–80.
Taxis
Available at all terminal curbsides. Metered fare from LAX to DTLA: approximately $50–70 depending on traffic. Fixed price for some destinations — ask the dispatcher.
Rental Cars
The Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility (ConRAC) is connected via the LAX APM. Driving in LA during the Olympics is not recommended unless your venue lacks transit access (e.g., Honda Center in Anaheim). Parking at most venues is limited and expensive during events.
Practical Tips for Arriving During the Olympics
- Arrive at LAX 3–3.5 hours before international flights; 2.5 hours for domestic
- Do not assume rideshare availability — have the Metro route as backup
- Have your accommodation address and first venue information ready for border questions
- Carry USD cash — not every transport option or small vendor accepts cards
- Get a US SIM or international eSIM before leaving your home country if possible
